Lessons from UTMB 100km

March 6, 2026

Finishing the UTMB 100km was one of the hardest things I have done. Here are a few lessons that stayed with me.

Preparation compounds

You cannot cram for a 100km. The work happens months before. Consistent training, gradual build-up, and respecting rest days matter more than any single heroic week.

Patience over pace

In the mountains, the terrain dictates the rhythm. Pushing too hard early costs you later. Learning to hold back when you feel strong is a skill.

Nutrition is part of the race

Eating and drinking are not afterthoughts. They are the fuel. Practice your nutrition strategy in training. What works at 20km may not work at 80km.

The mind matters

When the body wants to stop, the mind decides whether you continue. Building mental resilience through long training runs pays off when the race gets hard.

Simplicity scales

The same principles that work for a marathon apply to 100km: train consistently, respect the distance, and trust the process.
